I got told by a very good friend that ‘From Dusk Til Dawn’ was a must see. When you get told a film is a must see, you assume it’s good, right?
I looked it up; a Quentin Tarantino film starring George Clooneyand Tarantino himself. Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis. Two brothers are on the run after robbing a bank in Texas. They escape across the border into Mexico after forcing the Fuller family to take them across. When in Mexico, waiting to give their boss money, they have to survive in a run down strip club ‘from dusk til dawn’. This all sounded very encouraging.
And it was good! The first hour I was enthralled. Clooney as the wiser older brother, Seth, played off Tarantino brilliantly as his slightly psychopathic younger sibling, Richard. Their dialogue was quick witted and sharp, keeping your attention even when it was just the two of them on screen. Their unfortunate encounters and tendency to get themselves into an even more sticky situation was funny, whilst also keeping the serious undertone that they were on the run and extremley dangerous criminals.
When they arrived at the strip club I didn’t know where the film was headed. It had all be quite pacy up until this point. What I was definatley not expecting though, was for this risky, intelligent crime thriller, to turn into a cheap, gory, vampire film. Continue reading
