King Colin

Greetings!

As I write this, the stars of British television and film are gathering in Central London and strutting down the red carpet for one of the main events of awards season. It’s the BAFTAS!

The Kings Speech is nominated for an astounding 14 awards and it’s star Colin Firth is also hoping to pick up an award or two to add to his ever increasing collection. Firth is tipped to win the gong for Best Actor for the second year running, after his performance as the stuttering King George VI drew praise from all over the world. Out of the 26 (Yes, 26) awards he’s won for this part, they include the Golden Globe and more recently the Film Critics Circle Award for best actor and has been nominated for an Oscar so his chances look pretty good, however he has strong competition in the other nominees; Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Jeff Bridges (True Grit), Javier Bardem (Biutiful) and James Franco (127 Hours).

Inception is nominated for 9 awards and Black Swan has 12 chances to win, with Natalie Portman tipped to win Best Actress. Continue reading

Golden Globes 2011

No real suprises at the Golden Globes last night.

Amongst the big winners, ‘The Social Network’ deservedly picked up four  awards, including the top prize for Best Dramatic Film. Colin Firth’s breaktaking performance as King George VI won him the award for Best Actor whilst Natalie Portman won Best Actress in a drama.

Glee also established themselves as the best on television by picking up three awards including Best TV Musical or Comedy.

Ricky Gervais delivered cheap laughs in his opening speech; starting the show with, “Welcome to a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.” The whole thing could have been rather awkward but Gervais made it work. He even succeeded in making Johnny Depp laugh after calling his performance in the ‘The Tourist’ 2D and implying the film was only nominated as a result of a bribe.  Continue reading
